Open Art Courses for Adults and Children
The school offers a variety of courses for adults in drawing, life classes with a model, colour theory, oil and acrylic painting, watercolour painting, illustration and comic art, ceramics, textiles, photography and computer courses. These courses are evaluated at a secondary education level and are open for any one over the age of sixteen. No prior study is required but students are advised to start with a drawing course as the basis for all further studies in art and design. With satisfactory completion of a course, 80% minimum attendance, students are awarded credits and grades.
In collaboration with the Reykjavík Department of Education and Youth selected preschools and primary schools are invited to participate in art workshops that take place in Myndlistaskólinn. The aim of the art workshops is to further support and deepen the art teaching that takes place within the pre-school and primary school. The procedures used in art studies are introduced to administrators and teachers, while students get the opportunity to get to know the work environment in a specially equipped art school. The artist's working methods are introduced and students are taught to apply creative thinking to a variety of project work.
The school also offers several studio courses for people who wish to work independently on their art with guidance from professional artists. One such course is provided for artists with intellectual disabilities.
Much emphasis has always been put on quality art courses for children and young people. Courses are organized around age groups of 4–5, 6–9, 10–12 and 13–16 year olds. In the youngest group there are no more than six children, but the number of pupils grows as the age goes up, with a maximum of twelve in the teenage groups. During the winter courses are held weekly but in the summer most courses are taught daily for a week.
General part-time courses and children’s art courses are open to everyone but to ensure an enjoyable experience at the school, the enrolment of non-Icelandic speaking students to a specific course requires consultation with the teacher of the course.
